Horizon Sendai Primary School opened in 2016 as the first government-recognized elementary school in the Tohoku region to offer English immersion education. Building on the strong foundation developed in our Early Learning Centre—learning through English and an inquiry-based approach—students deepen their understanding and grow into confident, independent learners at the elementary level.
Students are welcomed not only from our ELC, but also from other kindergartens and schools.
Designated by Japan’s Ministry of Education as a Special Curriculum School, we deliver subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Art, Life Studies (Inquiry-Based Learning), Integrated Studies, and ICT entirely in English or through a bilingual (English–Japanese) approach. Lessons taught in English are led by international teachers, while Japanese-language lessons are taught by Japanese educators, allowing for effective team teaching that draws on each teacher’s expertise.
Our campus offers a naturally bilingual environment where English and Japanese are used side by side. Beyond the classroom, during recess, lunchtime, and daily school life, students regularly engage in both languages as they share ideas, communicate with peers, and build strong interpersonal skills.
Horizon Sendai Primary School is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP). We continue the inquiry-based learning that begins in kindergarten, nurturing students’ curiosity and encouraging them to ask “Why?” and “How?” as they develop a love of lifelong learning.
By integrating the Japanese national curriculum with the PYP framework, our teaching team carefully designs learning experiences that support each child’s academic, linguistic, and personal growth. Whether progressing from our kindergarten or joining us from another school, students are supported in a welcoming environment where they can begin their learning journey with confidence.
